Cultural and Business tips

Cultural tips

Senegalese
society is stratified by gender, women and men attending the same social function do so separately.
This is reinforced by
Senegal's predominately Muslim population.

People tend to avoid making eye contact out of courtesy and deference to a superior – it is considered to be most polite.

Muslim men will shake hands with other men when greeting but will not shake a woman’s hand.

Business Tips

It is essential to be able to speak French for business purposes. Commercial interpreters and translation services are available.

Business Dress: Lightweight suit and tie for formal meetings otherwise open – neck shirt can be worn.

Appointments need to be made and it is important to be punctual even although the customer may be slightly late.

Business cards are essential and should preferably be in English and French.

July to October should be avoided for business purposes as many people take their holidays over this period.

Only the right hand should be used for shaking hands and for passing items.
